AC Cars had been producing the Ace, along with its Bristol and 2.6 variants since 1953, but by the early 1960s the Ace had reached the end of its development potential. Carroll Shelby approached owner Charles Hurlock in 1961 with the idea of replacing its six-cylinder engine with a Ford V8. The experiment produced the AC Ace 3.6, the first AC Cobra, though these early Mark I and II cars (1962–1965) struggled with mechanical failures and even suffered a gutting loss at the 1963 Nassau Speed Week. These shortcomings led to the birth of the 1965 Cobra 427 (Mark III), redesigned with a stronger chassis, frame, and body and powered by a 427 cu. in. FE engine. It made its debut at the 1966 Brands Hatch Ilford 500 and soon dominated race tracks, influencing automotive performance despite homologation and financial issues that limited its international racing opportunities and ended production in 1967.

The Ford-built 427ci V8 produces 480 horsepower, and pairs to a Tremec T5 5-speed manual transmission. Blacked-out accessories, Ford valve covers, and ceramic-coated black headers underscore its commanding presence. Performance is explosive: 0–60 mph in 3.7 seconds and a top track speed of 155 mph. It may be fast, but it is also a controlled, respectful elevation of Carroll Shelby's original vision.
